In order that active substances may be used as or for biocidal products, they have to be «approved» or at least be notified for approval.

Product types

Biocidal products fall into 4 main groups: disinfectants, preservatives, pest control and others. Together, they comprise 22 product types (Annex 10 of the Ordinance on Biocidal Products).

Biocidal products can only be placed on the market if their active substances come from suppliers listed under Article 95. This ensures fair competition and protection of intellectual property.

Biocidal products with precursors for the in-situ generation of active substances

In situ generated active substances can be defined as substances which are generated at the place of use from one or more precursors.

Active substances meeting the subsequent exclusion criteria should normally not be approved for use in biocidal products.

Application for the approval of a (new) active substance

The Swiss authorities can also take on the role of evaluating authority for a new biocidal active substance.
