Biocidal product family AN

A biocidal product family means a group of biocidal products having the following properties in common:

  • similar uses;
  • the same active substances;
  • similar composition with specified variations;
  • similar level of risk;
  • similar efficacy.

The risk assessment for humans, animals and the environment as well as the efficacy is based on the same requirements as for a single biocidal product AN. For more detailed information, please consult the internet page of the Notification Authority for Chemical Authorisation procedure AN.

A biocidal product family contains defined concentration ranges of the specified ingredients. These concentration ranges, with the exception of the concentration range for the active substance, can also be defined by the concentration range zero.

The biocidal products within a biocidal product family are categorised based on certain criteria, either into several or at least one (1) sub-family.

Biocidal products may have to be categorised in different sub-families for the following reasons:

  • a. due to different H and P phrases, respectively different risks;
  • b. due to different formulation types (e.g. liquid versus gel);
  • c. due to different efficacies.

For further information, we recommend you consult the ECHA guidance notes:

CA-July19-Doc.4.2- Final - Guidance note on BPF concept_rev2.docx

All biocidal products in a sub-family must have the same classification and labelling, but may differ slightly in the product type, use, method of use, categories of use, and packaging.

The information for a biocidal product family is provided via information levels:

  • Information on the biocidal product family;
  • Information on the sub-family (also called metaSPC or metaFamily in some documents);
  • Information on each individual biocidal product within the biocidal product family.

For the purpose of an application (see the specific page on the left the third level information is entered in the Product register for chemicals, and the first and second level information in an Excel spreadsheet.
