Classification and labelling

Everything you need to know about classification and labelling. You will also find explanations about the UFI here.

Classification

As part of the classification procedure substances and preparations/mixtures are assessed in regard to their hazardous characteristics and assigned to pre-defined hazard classes.

Labelling

The label for chemical products contains the most important information for safe product use. It provides information on potential risks, applicable protective measures and what to do in case of an accident.

Derogations from the labelling

In the legal texts derogations are provided for small packages of less than 125 mL. Applications for exemption are possible in Switzerland for other special cases.

Use of an alternative chemical name

If the European Chemicals Agency ECHA has approved the use of an alternative chemical name in accordance with Article 24 of the EU CLP Regulation, the use of the name shall be deemed to have been approved in Switzerland from the time at which the Notification Authority has taken note of the following documents and data: a. Decision of the European Chemicals Agency; b. Information on substance identity in accordance with Article 49 letter c numbers 1-3.

Hazard pictogram

Hazard pictograms constitute part of the labelling of chemicals. The hazard pictograms are an eye-catcher and serve as a rough orientation.

UFI (Unique Formula Identifier)

The Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) is a 16-digit alphanumeric code that must be printed on labels of hazardous chemical products. You can find all the necessary information here.
