Biozidprodukte dürfen nur in Verkehr gebracht, gewerblich und beruflich verwendet werden, wenn sie gemäss Biozidprodukteverordnung (VBP, SR 813.12) zugelassen, mitgeteilt oder anerkannt sind. Bei den Biozidprodukten obliegt die Verantwortung für das Inverkehrbringen der Zulassungsinhaberin.
Biozidprodukte dienen der Bekämpfung von Schadorganismen durch Abtötung oder Abschreckung. Als Biozidprodukte gelten Zubereitungen oder Wirkstoffe in der Form, in der sie zum Verwender gelangen. Das heisst, zur Person, die das Produkt zum bioziden Zweck verwendet, z.B. Desinfektion, Schädlingsbekämpfung oder Schutz einer Farbe mit einem Topfkonservierungsmittel. Ein Biozidprodukt wirkt auf chemischem oder biologischem aber nicht physikalischem Weg. Je nach Verwendungszweck(en) gehört es zu mindestens einer der 22 Produktarten. Biozidprodukte dürfen nur notifizierte oder genehmigte Wirkstoffe enthalten.

Biocidal active substances
In order that active substances may be used as or for biocidal products, they have to be «approved» or at least be notified for approval.
Product types
Biocidal products fall into 4 main groups: disinfectants, preservatives, pest control and others. Together, they comprise 22 product types (Annex 10 of the Ordinance on Biocidal Products).

Authorisations according to the European harmonized system
Biocidal products that contain only approved active substances (active substances that have been incorporated into the lists in Annex 1 or Annex 2 OBP), can be placed on the Swiss market only with an authorisation from the European harmonised procedure.
